Ubuntu-Women IRC Meeting June 12 21:00 UTC 2008
The Ubuntu Women project has become very social - hypa7ia felt this was one of the most important things the community could do
- pleia2 agreed noting that it was cool that people were "sharing similar experiences, spending time with similar folks, [and] being supportive" but did not feel this should be everything.
- hypa7ia agreed.
Duplication of effort continues to be a bothersome problem pleia2 offered http://ubuntu-women.org/getinv.html as an example.
- The community has better sites like this and UW may be doing a disservice by creating their own
- The duplication of effort problem justified moving away from doing Courses and promoting #ubuntu-classroom instead.
The mentoring program - hypa7ia suggested positioning UW as more of a mentoring resource to encourage others to get involved.
- pleia2 acknowledged this but added that in two years the UW mentoring program has not yet taken off.
- Nightrose suggested that it may get better now that we have women in influential positions.
- emmajane raised the open question of how many Ubuntu women "have time and are interested in being a mentor?"
- It was suggested that finding mentors was easier than finding mentees.
- emmajane offered that the focus should be on finding women good mentors regardless of gender.
- Connecting people with mentors that aren't really committed could backfire and turn off new comers.
- There was general agreement and it was affirmed that mentors do not have to be women, but merely good people.
- There was general agreement that the UW mentoring project was worthwhile.
- hypa7ia, Myrtti, and mouz each expressed an interest in receiving mentorship in packaging.
- It was suggested that since much of the packaging process is similar in Debian, Ubuntu-Women could work with Debian-Women to get mentors for basic tutorials.
- Myrtti suggested contacting maddog to see if he would like to be involved/offer suggestions.
- It was suggested that since much of the packaging process is similar in Debian, Ubuntu-Women could work with Debian-Women to get mentors for basic tutorials.
- james_w said he would like to help with mentoring if there was demand for it.
Should Ubuntu Women continue in its current form? - The question was raised by emmajane who cited a lack of action as a major concern.
- Ubuntu Women provides valuable support and resources for women in the Ubuntu community.
See http://wiki.ubuntu-women.org/Profiles
- It was affirmed that the Profiles page is looking awesome.
- emmajane offered that Ubuntu-Women needs to hold itself to the same standards as other sanctioned groups
- More activity needs to be seen on the Ubuntu Women Road map.
- Nightrose offered that Ubuntu Women could do more but what it was doing is enough.
- When people post to the list UW responds with help.
- emmajane noted that every other Ubuntu group has a road map and reports back to the main project on what has been accomplished.
- emmajane's articles in Full Circle Magazine were cited by pleia2 as an example of such accomplishments
- mouz made a 4 month commitment to read FCM and report UW columns on the list.
- hypa7ia volunteered to make sure meetings happen more regularly.
- emmajane's articles in Full Circle Magazine were cited by pleia2 as an example of such accomplishments
- emmajane reiterated her call for increased clarity, action, and personal accountability in Ubuntu-Women.
Streamlining Ubuntu-Women and decreasing redundancy - Go through the Ubuntu Women website and remove redundancy. Point to the appropriate general community pages.
- Remove content that is not sufficiently related to Ubuntu-women's issues.
- Examples on the wiki include Human-Computer Interaction and Ubuntu Community Process
- pleia2 volunteered to head this effort
- Remove content that is not sufficiently related to Ubuntu-women's issues.
The next meeting - It was agreed that the next meeting would take place in about a month
After 46 minutes, this meeting of the Ubuntu-Women group was adjourned.
