Ubuntu-Women IRC Meeting July 1 15:00 UTC 2007
The meeting this time around centered around dinda's upcoming talk at Ubuntu Live.
elkbuntu (Melissa Draper) gave a talk about Women in F/OSS at the Canberra LUG, there were about 25 attendees, including 5 women where there are usually none! Video of her talk will be available soon.
dinda (Belinda Lopez) will be giving a talk at Ubuntu Live entitled Why Do We Need an Ubuntu Women's Project? and asked for input from the group.
She will start out with a quick history
pleia2 (Elizabeth Bevilacqua) filled in a few things in history and invited dinda to ask more questions of her and Susana, since both have been active in the U-W community since it began
dinda asked about "leadership" structure of the organization
pleia2 pointed out that Vid is the founder and still runs the Launchpad team with a couple co-admins, but there are several women in key positions in the project who keep things running from day to day
we pretty much agreed that these days leadership is spread out in the project and decisions are made by way of general consensus
dinda explained her take on the subject:
" as long people make unwarranted assumptions about someone's ability to contribute to the community based solely on gender, then we need this project"
"I've yet to see the case where someone sees a guy and automatically assumes he has no technical skills or even a right to be in there simply b/c he's a guy"
"There will be some reference to the FOSS numbers and other stats but I'd mainly like to stick with the Ubuntu community"
dinda also said she'd like to give a nod to LinuxChix and other upstream projects
Sulamita showed up at the meeting and offered to send dinda a translated version of linuxchix-br's FAQ that discuss things like "all LUG are generic, isn't linuxchix unnecessary?"
dinda will be posting her talk outline/notes on the wiki for review by the group, she looks forward to comments.
The meeting wrapped up with some discussion on who is attending what conferences in the near future. Looks like there will be some U-W meet-ups!
